Democrats must avoid responding defensively to the conventional framing of national security in which chauvinism equates with toughness, while caution, reciprocity, factuality and rationality are deemed "weakness.''

Obama's "yes we can'' neo-JFK rhetoric is perfect for the task.

Clinton's triangulation is disastrous. It worked for Bill because the Cold War had collapsed along with the permanent war rationale that sustained it.

The permanent war rationale is, unfortunately, back with a vengeance so 2008 candidates will have to choose between the Clinton "I'm tough too" path or reframing the issue to assert that chauvinism is neither tough, nor smart, nor effective.

Obama needs only to ask the questions:

Can we secure the nation from military and terrorist threats without engaging in expensive counterproductive military adventures like the one in Iraq?

Yes we can.

Can we counter extremist ideology without ignoring the civil liberties we cherish and draw power and definition from as Americans?

Yes we can..

and so on...
